As the oldest daughter of Irish immigrant parents, Michael William Sweeney of Cork and Catherine Elizabeth Maloney of County Clare, Catherine was the second of four children.
Under her, the country prospered, schools were established, laws enacted, wars fought and won.
She clearly had some sort of debilitating muscular disease, because as the years went on it progressed to the point where she was considered an invalid.
